Adventure Awaits: Geocaching COMMUNITY CELEBRATION Event at Camp Hearne Historic Site
[Hearne, TX – May 17, 2025]. — Outdoor enthusiasts, history buffs, and treasure hunters alike are invited to embark on a unique adventure at Camp Hearne Historic Site! On Saturday, May 17, 2025 from 12 noon to 2pm, visitors will have the opportunity to experience the thrill of geocaching, a modern-day treasure hunt that blends technology, exploration, and historical discovery.
The geocaching community is celebrating 25 years of global participation in this unique outdoor recreational activity. This “sport” involves participants to use GPS devices or smartphone apps to navigate specific coordinates and locate hidden containers, or “geocaches.” These geocaches often contain logbooks for participants to sign and small trinkets for trade. It’s a global phenomenon that encourages adventure, problem-solving, and outdoor fun for all ages.
At Camp Hearne, a former World War II prisoner of war camp, geocachers will not only engage in the challenge of finding hidden caches but also uncover the rich history of the site. As they follow the GPS coordinates, participants will explore historic landmarks, learn about the camp’s past, and gain a deeper appreciation for the stories embedded in the landscape.
“This event offers a unique blend of technology, history, and outdoor adventure,” said Jerry Deal, organizer of the geocaching event. “Whether you’re an experienced geocacher or a first-time explorer, this is a fantastic way to engage with history in a hands-on and exciting way.”
Participants are encouraged to bring their own GPS-enabled device or smartphone with a geocaching app, preferably compatible with Groundspeck’s “GeocachingR“ application. Or you may download the “GeocachingR” mobile app to begin your adventure. We ask that you download to your smartphone before you arrive, create your basic account for free, and check out to our Hearne Texas Event. While there, please let us know you are coming.
The event is family-friendly and open to all skill levels. A Geocaching 101 short course is scheduled for 12pm for the newcomers. Geocaching.com offers a great assortment of tutorials to help the beginners.
Admission is free, but donations to support the preservation and educational programs at Camp Hearne are always welcome.
