FRIEND OF THE ENEMY

This is an Independent Film by LUKE 631 Productions & CDA Film. As one of the locations used during its filming, we are thrilled to introduce this short film project for your enjoyment. Inspired by the rich historical backdrop of Camp Hearne, a WWII German POW camp in Hearne, Texas, the film tells a poignant story of humanity amidst the chaos of war.

“Friend of the Enemy” is a compelling fictional tale of an unlikely connection between a Texan farmer, Lamar, and a young German prisoner of war, Jurgen. As Lamar struggles to manage his farm with a war injury, he reluctantly accepts Jurgen’s assistance, and their interactions challenge stereotypes, reveal shared vulnerabilities, and explore the moral complexities of wartime survival.

The screenplay has been adapted from a short story by the same tile, “Friend of the Enemy,” written by Austin-based freelance/creative writer John Maes. Drawing from meticulously researched histories, including Dr. Michael Waters’ Lone Star Stalag and the Camp Hearne collection of artifacts, documents and personal stories, this short film intertwines historical authenticity with a universal message about resilience and the Golden Rule, “-do unto others.”

The setting’s historic surroundings and the nuanced character dynamics aim to evoke reflection on humanity’s capacity for compassion even in adversarial circumstances.

After a few months on the Film Festival circuit, we hope to have widespread release of this short film through various platforms. Until then, below is the short film’s trailer to peak your interest.
