Camp Hearne Spring Encampment Saturday- June 1, 2024
Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day
[Hearne, TX] – Step back in time and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of World War II at the upcoming Spring Encampment Living History Event. Join us as we remember the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day offensive with a day filled with interactive displays and activities that bring this pivotal era to life. Engage with our impressive Living Historians on Saturday, June 1st, 2024, at the Camp Hearne Historic Site & Exhibit.
Experience the authenticity of the period as reenactors don authentic uniforms and gear, representing both Allied and Axis forces. Witness displays of military vehicles, equipment, and weapons from the era, and participate in demonstrations showcasing the impressions of WWII personalities and services by our Living Historians.
In addition to the interactive exhibits, visitors can embark on a tour of the Camp Hearne Exhibit and Trails, delving into the history of how the US War Department interned nearly 432,000 prisoners-of-war throughout America. Camp Hearne, which housed up to 4800 POWs, offers insights into their journey, survival strategies during captivity, and America’s adherence to its Geneva Convention commitments, which played a crucial role in post-war reconstruction efforts in Europe and Japan.
“We are honored to host a diverse array of talented reenactors for this event,” said Cathy Lazarus, the event coordinator. “This presents a unique opportunity to learn about the sacrifices of our nation’s greatest generation and pay tribute to their enduring legacy.”
The Spring Encampment will take place at the Camp Hearne Historic Site and is free and open to the public. The event will commence at 10:00 a.m. and conclude at 4:00 p.m. We encourage visitors to bring along their families and friends to partake in this enriching experience. Camp Hearne is situated northwest of Hearne on FM 485. For further information, please visit camphearne.com or contact Cathy Lazarus or Melissa Freeman at 979-314-7012.
